THE SPIRIT OF SARAH

By Linda Houle

There's a building over on Doering Court in Old Town Spring that's well known for the resident spirit--a little girl named Sarah. While it housed the Old Town Spring Souvenir Newspaper office I had the pleasure of conducting several all night investigations, and I had the unique experience of "meeting" the spirit of Sarah! Who's Sarah? Legend has it that over a hundred years ago, when the building was used as a barn, a little girl loved to play in the hay loft. She fell down from the loft and broke her leg, and died soon after... Apparently she thinks she's still around, and psychics have "seen" her still playing in the building--along with the ghosts of other children. Quite a few people have heard the sound of balls bouncing and running feet in the loft. Some even hear a child giggling. While the Souvenir was housed in the building the owner would find things moved around or missing...

Evidence on tape...

My investigation included the use of an infrared video camera. Spirit energy, typically in the form of floating orbs of light, is visible in the infrared spectrum. What I couldn't see with my eyes I was determined to capture on tape. I set up an assortment of small toys on a table upstairs in what used to be the hay loft. I told Sarah she was welcome to come out and play. I waited downstairs...watching...listening. Periodically I went up to the loft, checking for any sign she'd been there. Nothing. It was a long night, and I'd brought an air mattress and pillow. I lay resting, watching, waiting... Suddenly I felt an icy chill, and a stong pressure around my throat. This happened several times (I had to go outside to catch my breath!) Though no toys were moved, later review of over eight hours of video tape revealed the startling evidence of Sarah's spirit. Each time I walked over to check on the toys the camera captured a little orb following me--this happened at least three times! The audio portion of the tape caught the sound of a ball bouncing--so Sarah WAS playing, with her spirit toys...

 WUNSCHE BROTHERS CAFE AND SALOON

Perhaps the most famous historic and haunted building in Old Town Spring is Wunsche Brothers Cafe. Built in 1902 by three brothers, Dell, Charlie and Willie Wunsche, it was originally the Wunsche Brothers Hotel and Saloon until it became the Spring Cafe around 1949. There may be several spirits in the cafe, but one that's actually been "seen" and identified is Charlie Wunsche. Legend has it that Charlie fell in love with a young lady who didn't return his affection--she ran off with another man. Charlie lived out the rest of his life in the hotel, using an upstairs bedroom. He died in 1915. Whether it's Charlie, or perhaps another spirit, someone or something makes clanking noises and footsteps, moving from room to room throughout the building. Spirit activity is at its highest whenever the restaurant makes changes of any kind--doors lock unexpectedly, chairs and tables move around, and items go missing, only to turn up later. Once a spirit even locked an employee in an upstairs restroom!
