A SPIRITED ESTATE It seems it was Loretta Lynn's destiny to buy Hurricane Mills (the town) and the beautiful Plantation House. Two years before she even bought the home she wrote the song "This Haunted House." Currently open for tours, this grand estate has several resident spirits. A lady in white has appeared to many people, and is thought to be the spirit of a woman named Beula Anderson, who gave birth to a stillborn baby then died twelve days later. Another ghost is thought to be another member of the Anderson family--referred to as "Old Man Anderson" by Loretta--he's the original owner of the home. There's one bedroom on the second floor known as the "brown room" that is always cold, and dead flies tend to collect on the windowsill. Nobody likes to stay in that room... Part of the home's history included slaves, and there's an opening on the porch, under a white bench, that leads to a hole called the "slave pit" where they were sometimes chained to the wall for punishment. Loretta has heard the sound of footsteps and chains rattling out on the porch... |

PSYCHIC GIFT...OR CURSE? Loretta Lynn was blessed, or perhaps cursed, with a psychic gift that gave her a premonition of her father's death --she also experienced a seizure at the time of her son's death (he drowned in a river on the property.) She could also "feel" if her mother was depressed or upset. Her mother had similar feelings when Loretta was sad.
