Laura Elvebak has been writing fiction and non-fiction most of her life. She was born in a small town in North Dakota, but raised in Southern California. Laura studied screenwriting under Richard Walters at UCLA, took fiction and non-fiction classes at USC, and also Rice University. She majored in Journalism at Chaffey Community College, and went on to write many feature articles. She also studied screenwriting with studio professionals at Beyond Baroque in Venice, California. Laura co-wrote, directed, and acted in a one-act play produced at Country Playhouse.
In 2000 she was hired by Bayou Country Productions to rewrite a script about the 1900 Galveston storm, which they subsequently optioned and renewed for three consecutive years. The company also hired her to write a different screenplay about the Storm, followed by a children's screenplay.
An earlier script of Laura's was a finalist in the Empire Screenwriting Contest in California. Laura also published monthly self-help articles in the San Francisco area's Single Again Magazine and was a ghostwriter for several chapters in a book by a psychiatrist. Her short stories and novels have won many awards.
Laura always heard that writers should have interesting life experiences from which to draw their creative juices. She picked her six husbands because they made great characters - a motorcycle racer, a hard-hat diver, an actor/bartender, a Hawaiian chef...unfortunately none were very good husband material! She did get to live in a variety of places - New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, six cities in Florida, and six months in Baja California before returning to California and finally moving to Texas in 1981.
To subsidize her writing she has worked as a waitress, bookkeeper, go-go dancer, car salesperson, retail salesperson, a psychiatric assistant, and legal and corporate secretary! All she really wants to do is write mysteries and screenplays. Laura served two years as a chapter president of Mystery Writers of America, Southwest, and is currently their Treasurer and newsletter editor. She is also a member of Sisters in Crime.
