TEXAS HISTORY--TEXAS TRAGEDY--GOLIAD Presidio La Bahia was originally built on the site of the abandoned Fort St. Louis in 1721, and later moved several times until it reached it's present location in 1749. Colonel James Walker Fannin took over the fort in 1836, naming it Fort Defiance. Unfortunately, Mexican General Santa Anna and his troops defeated Fannin and his men in one of the bloodiest massacres of the Texas Revolution. Over 300 men were executed, their bodies stacked and burned and buried in a mass grave. The fort now stands as a monument to these soldiers. It's no wonder that this site is full of spirit activity! Not only do visitors sometimes see the shadowy figures of soldiers, there are also several women in black seen in the chapel, and another woman in white who floats across the grounds. Sounds of women singing and babies crying are common occurrences. |
