BLACK SWAN INN

Near San Antonio, Texas

This beautiful two-story house is situated overlooking Salado Creek, on land that was once used by Native Americans. Artifacts found in the area date back many thousands of years. Following the Texas War for Independence, another battle was fought with the Mexican Army on this land--there is a historical marker by the Salado river. The Black Swan Inn was originally smaller, built as the home of German immigrants Henrich and Marie Mahler. Their children inherited the property, and it was later sold to the Holbrooks, the aunt and uncle of Joline Woods. Some time later, after Joline married Park Street, they made this their home, doing extensive remodeling, including adding a second story. Park Street was a successful attorney, and it is possible that the "Perry Mason" character was inspired by his flamboyant courtroom methods. His good friend, attorney Earle Stanley Gardner, wrote the Perry Mason stories.

Are Joline and Park Street the resident ghosts? The Streets were socially prominent, holding many grand parties in the house. Tragically, Joine died of cancer when she was in her late 30's. Park Street later remarried, and from then on lived mainly at another residence. He also died tragically--he was found hung from a bedpost. Did Joline and Park's spirits unite in the afterlife? Are they two of the ghosts that are seen in the house and on the grounds? A child's spirit also seems fond of the house and grounds--could this be one of the children of the home's first owners, the Mahlers? The sound of the piano playing by itself is often heard, and a phantom music box echos from the walls. Knocking sounds, lights going off and on by themselves, and eerie faces in the windows are more signs of the Black Swan's spirits. The beautiful gazebo has been the site for many weddings, and sometimes a slender young woman with dark hair, wearing a white flowing gown is seen or even photographed there--could this be the spirit of Joline?
